This book came about as a desire for my own kids to have resource material at their fingertips. Some of it on the lighter side and some of it essential for their health, safety and just general knowledge ... and of course recipes ... something to remind them of home when they were at other ends of the country and then the globe.
I wanted to make sure that they knew things that they didn't even know they needed to know.
Recently our son was in South East Asia traveling and our daughter was attending school in Spain. In both instances, the mother tongue was not English and I worried whether they would be able to self diagnose meningitis for example.
I couldn't bear to hear one more story of some freak accident solely because someone didn't have the necessary practical skills or knowledge to avoid the more serious pitfalls in life. Something as simple as not taking aspirin when flu-like symptoms are present.
As a serial renovator, I also added information to teach some practical life skills, to those who were more mechanically challenged.
The book has taken on a life of its own as roommates used the information, additional crude copies went out, word got around, and parents started asking for copies. Goingsolo was born.
"GoingSolo (Luma, 2008), written by Brenda Bradstreet, is a guidebook that outlines what your kids will need to know to survive their first years away from home. Ranging from the essentials that even your parents told you as a kid, to little unknown tips and tricks on how to make it on their own, this handbook is the perfect little present to slip into your teens suitcase as they fly the nest."
